About John Woldin

IMG_1510.jpg

John Woldin was raised in South Orange NJ. Coming from a theatrical family – his mother a singer and his father a broadway composer – John spent much of his time backstage at the St. James Theatre in New York, where his greatest memories are the bright red and gold colors of the costumes, and the brilliant spot lights reflecting on the white tuxedo shirts of the orchestra’s musicians.

He has always been fascinated by the beauty of different textures and patina – rusted corten steel, lichen on tree bark, or old painted water pipes. John's first series, Macro Subjectivism One, is inspired by broken tiles, exploring the relationship of space and shapes in the context of language, how each piece interacts with another, reminiscent of cuneiform or glyphs.

John graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York with a degree in painting and design. After spending most of his life as an award-winning art director at top New York ad agencies and raising a family, he has decided to finally focus all of his attention to painting.
